COVID-19 Q&A

What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is an infectious disease that’s caused by a virus named SARS-CoV-2. This virus easily spreads from one person to the next by way of tiny liquid particles that enter the air when an infected person speaks, coughs, sneezes, or breathes.

Most people who contract COVID-19 can fight off the infection without becoming severely ill. However, some people who catch the infection become gravely ill, and a small number lose their lives as a result of this virus.

People who are of advanced age or who have other health problems like cancer, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease are more likely to become seriously ill than healthy people. However, researchers note that anyone can catch COVID-19 and that even young, healthy individuals can get sick or die from these infections.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Understanding the signs and symptoms of COVID-19 can help you know when to take action to protect yourself and others. Slowing the spread of this disease is a critical part of moving beyond a pandemic that has truly changed the realities of daily life.

Some of the indications you might have COVID-19 include:

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Sore throat

  • New loss of smell or taste

  • Coughing

  • Headaches

  • Body aches

  • Fatigue

  • Diarrhea

As you can see, most of these symptoms are also commonly found with the common cold or flu. The only way to know for sure if you have it is to get screened.

Who should get tested for COVID-19?

Anyone who is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should come in for a screening visit. Advance Healthcare Associates offers COVID-19 PCR testing in addition to rapid testing.

Rapid testing offers the ability to receive swift results, but they work best when administered at the peak of infection. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing is a more accurate option and works by identifying the genetic material of COVID-19. Your practitioner can guide you toward the screening option best suited for your specific set of needs.

If you’ve been in close contact with someone who recently tested positive for COVID-19, you should take steps to isolate yourself from others for at least five days from the exposure, and then schedule a screening.

There are other circumstances where you may need to be tested. If you’re planning to attend a work or social function, screening might be required. Travel plans can also hinge on getting a negative screening result. If you’re unsure of how to move forward with various testing requirements, call the office for guidance.

Booking a visit is fast and easy, with online and in-person options available. Advance Healthcare Associates also offers telehealth visits, which can be a great option when you’re not feeling your best or if you need assistance outside of normal business hours.
